General Regulations

A Rhodes Scholarship is tenable at the University of Oxford. Confirmation of the Scholarship at election is however, subject to the Scholar-elect's acceptance by a college and by the concerned faculty in case of a research degree. Election to the scholarship is normally for two years but the scholarship may be held for one year only, depending upon the degree programme pursued by the scholar. The trustees impose no requirement that a scholar should study in Oxford for more than one year. A scholarship may be renewed, at the complete discretion of Trustees, for a third and final year for those who were initially admitted to Oxford to pursue a doctoral degree.

A Rhodes Scholarship covers approved university and college fees and other charges for which payment is made directly to the Scholar's college. It also covers living expenses sufficient to enable a Scholar to meet the necessary expenses for term-time and vacations. The Trust will also meet the cost of a Scholar's air travel, economy class, to the United Kingdom and of return to India on completion of studies at Oxford.

Tenure of other awards in conjunction with a Rhodes Scholarship is not permitted without prior consultation with the Secretary to the Trust in Oxford.

The Scholarship for which application is to made in 2008 will be tenable from October 2009 .

Conditions of Eligibility

1. The Scholarships are open to citizens of India.

2. Candidates must be of such an age that they will have passed their 19th and not have passed their 25th birthday on the 1st October 2009.

3. Candidates must have at least a first class degree in Humanities, Sciences, Law, Engineering, Agriculture or Medicine from an Indian University. Candidates who are in the Final year of a degree course and have exceptionally bright academic record may also apply.

4. Candidates for medical studies should consult the Secretary, as well as the Medical School Offices at Oxford, before submitting an application. Particular difficulties may arise for those wishing to do research in clinical departments.

5. Marriage is not a bar to applying for, or holding, a Rhodes scholarship. However, married candidates should bear in mind that the scholarship stipend is sufficient only for one person, and that the Trust takes no financial responsibility for the support of a scholar's spouse. Moreover, spouses who are not British citizens will find it very difficult to obtain permission to undertake paid work in England.

6. Subject to ratification by the Rhodes Trustees, the Committee of Selection for India is responsible for deciding whether candidates comply with forgoing conditions, and for making the nominations.

The Rhodes Scholarships owe their origin to the remarkable vision expressed in the Will of Cecil J. Rhodes, British colonial pioneer and statesman who died on March 26, 1902. He dreamed of bettering the lot of humankind through the diffusion of leaders motivated to serve their contemporaries, trained in the contemplative life of the mind, and broadened by their acquaintance with one another and by their exposure to cultures different from their own. Rhodes hoped that his plan of bringing able students from throughout the English-speaking world to study at the University where he took his degree in 1881 would aid in the promotion of international understanding and peace. Dedicated alumnus though he was, he was not moved merely by sentimental loyalty to establish the Scholarships at Oxford. Rhodes believed that, in addition to its eminence in the world of learning, Oxford University--with its emphasis on individualized instruction and on the community life provided by residential colleges--offered an environment highly congenial to personal and intellectual development.

Procedure after Selection

On receiving of election a Scholar will be asked to state in order, the colleges to which the successful candidate would most wish to obtain admission. A special form for this purpose will be supplied to the Scholar-elect by the Secretary of the Selection Committee. This form should reach Rhodes House by 6th December, 2008. Any change of address of Scholar-elect should be communicated to the latter and to Rhodes House.

Copies of the Oxford University Prospectus, Graduate Studies Prospectus, and Examination Decrees and Regulations will be issued to each Rhodes Scholar-elect after the election. Detailed information regarding these is also available on University of Oxford's website http://www.ox.ac.uk/. The Scholar will come into residence at Oxford in October, 2009. Postponement will not be sanctioned save in exceptional circumstances, and with the express permission of the Rhodes Trustees. The first installment of the Scholarship will be paid at the beginning of the Scholar's first term at Oxford. No request for earlier payment will be considered.

Courses open to Rhodes Scholars

Subject to the consent of the college, a Scholar may read for the Oxford B.A. in any of Final Honour Schools. The Scholar may be admitted, if qualified by previous training to, read for a higher degree**, such as the B.C.L, M.Lit., M.Sc, M.Phil., B.Phil. (for Philosophy) or D.Phil.

Rhodes Scholars-elect who wish to read for any degree (advanced or B.A.) or for a diploma in any Arts or Social Studies subjects (except the B.C.L. and the M.Sc. in Applied Social Studies) must submit two samples of recent written work. These should preferably, but not necessarily, be related to the intended subject of study. Candidates for graduate degree in Philosophy must submit essays on philosophy subjects. The samples should be of approximately 2000 words each, and may be essays or part of large works. These should be typed in English.

** The B.Phil, may be awarded in Philosophy only. M.Phil may be attempted in the following fields; European History General and Comparative Literature, Greek and Latin Languages and Literature International Relations, Latin American Studies, Management Studies, Music, Oriental Studies, Politics Prehistoric Archaeology, Russian and East European Studies, Sociology, Theology.
